My short movie Overdose is devoted to the life of a man called Jeremiah and how stress, routine, and bad influences may have serious consequences. The movie addresses such crucial social problems as the unhealthy work-life balance, drug abuse, and relationship destruction. The film, through the story of Jeremiah, demonstrates how one can easily develop bad habits when he is frustrated in his daily life. It is symbolic of adults who are trapped in a rut and how external forces, such as friends or social pressure, can lead one to make destructive choices.
Jeremiah is a working adult who is overwhelmed by his work and life. When the film begins, he is depicted as fatigued, stressed, and unconnected with his wife. This is a typical problem in society where individuals are so preoccupied with work that it ruins their relationships. His friend Santiago is another social group, a person who is more free but makes hasty choices, particularly in drugs. The movie, through Santiago, demonstrates that peer pressure can make individuals leave their comfort zone and make risky decisions. Maria, the wife of Jeremiah, is the emotional aspect of relationships and how neglect may cause conflict and subsequent breakdown. All these characters contribute to the discussion of the real-life problems that can be familiar to many individuals.
The components of my production collaborate to form an understandable and coherent feeling of branding. The general mood of the movie is gloomy and somber, which is indicative of the themes of stress, addiction, and aftermath. This is depicted in terms of lighting, camera shots, and locations. As an example, the office scenes are shot in a dull light and repeat shots to underline boredom and routine. Frustration is depicted in the driving scenes with close-ups and movement particularly when Jeremiah is in a jam. The scenes get more disorganized as the movie continues, particularly in the drug use scenes, which aids in demonstrating his mental deterioration.
My postcard and social media are also related to the branding. The postcard contains Jeremiah and Maria on the front as happy couple and Santiago and Jeremiah doing drugs on the back to show the differences in Jeremiahs life and how quickly it changed. I have a similar style in my social media, with dark colors, videos of the movie, and photos of the most important scenes such as the office, the pills, or the last scene. In addition I have multiple teasers and extras on there. All these combine in producing a brand that is realistic, serious, and emotional. The idea is that the audience needs to know at once that it is a dramatic movie about the struggles in life.
My products engage with the audience by being relatable and emotional. The emotion of being work-stressed or having a problem balancing personal life and duties can be related to many viewers. The movie employs real life scenarios such as fights between couples and peer influence by friends to ensure that the story is real. This assists the audience to be closer to the journey of Jeremiah.
Moreover, tension and shock have been employed in the film to maintain the interest of the audience. To illustrate, the drug scenes and the ultimate overdose evoke powerful emotions. The scene when Jeremiah finds Santiago and his wife in bed is also highly dramatic and surprising, making the viewers eager to watch. These are crucial dramatic moments as they make the audience consider the outcomes of the actions of Jeremiah. The audience is not only expected to sit back and watch to be entertained but also to think about the message of the film.
Social media is also involved in attracting the audience. Viewers can be made to feel closer to the production by sharing clips, behind-the-scenes and images. This is able to generate interest even before they view the movie. The postcard also assists in creating the attention as it provides a brief visual impression of the themes and the tone of the film. The combination of these products forms various means through which the audience can engage with the film.
Research was significant in influencing my film and the way it employs conventions. I accessed other films on drama that deal with similar themes such as stress, addiction, and personal struggles before developing the film. Most of these movies employ typical tropes like montage, close-up shots to express feelings, and darker lighting to make it look serious. I applied these methods in my own movie particularly in the montage scenes where Jeremiah is depicted repeating his daily routine. This aids in highlighting the fact that he is entrenched in his life.
Meanwhile, I did not avoid breaking a few rules as well. To illustrate, rather than a definite resolution or happy ending, my movie ends with an overdose, which is very dark and effective. This decision was deliberate as it emphasizes the gravity of the problems at hand. Not all stories in real life have a happy ending and I wanted my film to be like that.
The other aspect that research has impacted my work is in the depiction of drug use. I wanted it to be realistic and uncomfortable, demonstrating both the momentary thrill and the adverse effects. That is why the scenes begin to be more active but soon turn to be chaotic and dangerous. This is a depiction of the way drug use is commonly depicted in real life and media.
On balance, my research allowed me to learn how to effectively employ film techniques as well as enabled me to produce something special. Using the usual conventions along with my personal thoughts, I managed to produce a movie that would be both familiar and original.
To sum up, my short film addresses such significant social problems as work, relationships and addiction in the story of Jeremiah and his problems. The characters are the representatives of various social classes and emphasize the real-life issues which many individuals experience. The production aspects, such as lighting, camera work, and editing, are combined to produce a uniform brand throughout the film, postcard, and social media. The movie appeals to the audience by providing situations that they can relate to and emotional scenes, and research was used to inform the application of conventions and creative decisions. Despite some aspects that could be enhanced, the film manages to convey a powerful message regarding the impact of poor decisions and the significance of balance in life.
