Representation in the Media (Outer Banks)

Representation in the media is a very controversial topic. In the show Outer Banks, the representation of race, gender, and class offers different views on society, but it does not portray the world as it really is. The show is set in a region known for its racial mix, yet most main characters are white. Pope, one of the few Black characters, is portrayed as a smart and caring person, but his storyline is often pushed aside in favor of the white characters. This highlights a common issue in media: characters of color are present but not given the same screen time and appreciation.

The representation of the female gender is more apparent, with characters like Sarah and Kiara shown as independent. However, the roles of these characters are largely dependent on their relationships with the male characters. For a show aimed at a younger audience, this leaves an opportunity to include more important female roles.

Overall, the series touches on important themes, but its lack of meaningful racial and gender diversity is a limitation. True representation means not just including a large range of characters but including them with developed backstories and meaning. Outer Banks could go further in showing how race, culture, and gender shape people's lives, making its representation more impactful and authentic.
